Office Culture

When I started with Key, I didn’t know anything about the Automotive industry. To be honest, after my first day I almost didn’t come back because I thought it was impossible to learn everything that came with the job. Fast forward to today, four years later, and I am so happy that I didn’t give up! It is a challenging job but it is also incredibly rewarding. I am continually learning more and growing with this company.

I have learned many things in the time that I have been here:

Too much information is always better
It might seem like overkill, but I promise it’s not. I go back to my customers two to three times a day for more information (such as mother machine information or nameplate pictures) to get a part quoted. We welcome information with open arms: pictures, spec sheets, drawings, anything you have, send away! It helps us serve you better, quicker, and more efficiently.

Quote speeds are out of our control
A few of our vendors will quote an item to us within 30 seconds of our request. Most often, we will receive a response within one to two days. There are rare occasions, we have vendors that will take weeks (even months) to quote us. This is most often for reasons they cannot control such as the maker or where the part is coming from. Luckily, this is a rare occurrence. No matter who the vendor is or what the quote speed is, we work very hard to speed things along for the benefit of our customers.

We love our jobs
This is very well known. Eight out of the ten people who work in the office have been here for at least two years. To me, that is awesome. A company that can retain employees is doing something right. Getting to work with people who love what they do as much as I do makes the days more enjoyable. It makes it feel a little less like a workplace and a little more like home. I spend eight plus hours a day surrounded by nine people with very different personalities from mine and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Everyone has different ideas and approaches but at the end of the day, we all have the same goal and get there together.

We don’t adhere to the proverb all work and no play
I can honestly say there are very few dull moments here. We’re a family and that means we like to have fun while we work. We play a variety of music (and I do mean a variety). At any given time you can walk into the office and hear pop, old country, new country, hard rock, electronic dance music, or Christian and so on. We have conversations about very off the wall subjects and we are always joking or laughing at something. At least once a year we take a work trip to celebrate our successes and spend time together outside of the office. This year it’s Biltmore in Asheville, NC (if you’ve never been, I highly recommend it)!

For Christmas last year, we had a contest where our customers got to vote on who had the cutest dog in the office. Mine are obviously, but I’m also a bit bias. It was all in good fun and we had a great time getting to know our customers in such a unique way. Almost everyone in the office has a dog (or two) and we are always looking for ways to incorporate them into things that we do. I’m what you would call a crazy dog lady, I have been known over the years to my customers as the girl with the dogs in her email signature. It is a personal touch I added myself and it has presented the best opportunities to start conversations and learn more about the customers I work with daily. I thoroughly enjoy getting to know our customers.
